The Deluxe 9.5 water ionizer from Aqua Ionizer is essentially a beefed-up version of our Editor’s Choice Deluxe 7.0. If you’ve got the money to spend for this ionizer, we think it’s well worth it – and users agree. The 9.5 builds on the pH range of the 7.0 model by adding two additional platinum-coated titanium plates. That allows it to reach pH levels as low as 3 and as high as 11.5, which is a very impressive range. It also adds a significant amount of ORP to your water, with a maximum range of -880 mV.

What’s really exciting about the Deluxe 9.0 for many home users is that it can be placed on the countertop or modified to go under the sink. Users noted that countertop installation is extremely simple, and it only takes about 15 minutes to connect the ionizer to your faucet.

Importantly, this alkaline water system keeps many of the features that made the Deluxe 7.0 our Editor’s Choice. For example, it has an adjustable flow rate and a three-stage self-cleaning function that makes it simple to maintain the unit. It also has an active carbon filter with a lifespan of more than 1,000 gallons. One upgrade we were excited to find was a lifetime warranty, which is nice to have given the cost of this ionizer. Still, relative to other ionizers with the same pH and ORP ranges, the Deluxe 9.0 is very competitively priced.

What makes it stand out?

  • Nine titanium plates
  • Maximum ORP of -880 mV
  • Competitively priced
  • Lifetime warranty

Life Ionizer MXL-15Best Water Ionizer for pH Range

  • Type: countertop or under-counter
  • Number of plates: 15
  • pH range: 1.7 to 12.2
  • ORP: up to -703 mV
  • Filter life: not specified
  • Warranty: limited lifetime

Other features: advanced RADC Self-Cleaning; adjustable flow rate of up to 6 liters/minute

We’ll start off by saying that the Life Ionizer MXL-15 isn’t cheap. But, if you have the money for this premium alkalizer, it’s well worth the cost. This water ionizer is built to last, with 15 titanium-core extra-large GRID-style electrode plates. That’s a massive amount of electrode potential, and it enables this ionizer to yield the widest pH range for water production that we’ve seen – you can produce acid water down to pH 1.7 and alkaline water up to pH 12.2. Particularly for high-alkaline drinks like coffee and tea, that pH range can make an enormous difference in the quality of your water.

Importantly, making water with a pH over 12 also impacts its antioxidant potential. The MXL-15 has a maximum ORP of -1,005 mV, which blows away the rest of the competition.

This alkalizer also pays special attention to filtration and contaminant removal. The water chamber includes an ultraviolet sterilization system to kill microbes, including bacteria and viruses that can otherwise slip through the filtration system. The dual filters are designed to get rid of metals, including chromium, copper, mercury, and lead. Better yet, they can easily be removed from the top of the ionizer for replacement without any tools.

Controlling this ionizer is a little bit more complicated than for other units, since the LCD screen is smaller and there aren’t preset buttons for specific pH settings. However, you actually end up with more control, since you can route flow through only one of the two filters or specify what pH and ORP you’d like your water to be ionized to.

What are its best features?

  • Extremely wide pH range
  • Durable titanium plates
  • Maximum ORP of -1,005 mV
  • Ultraviolet sterilization and dual filters
  • Control the pH and ORP of your water precisely

What could be improved?

  • Expensive
  • Somewhat more difficult to press-and-go

Tyent ACE-11 Turbo Extreme Water IonizerBest Touchscreen Water Ionizer

  • pH range: 1.7 to 12.0
  • ORP: up to -1050
  • Filter life: not specified
  • Warranty: limited lifetime

Other features: 7 water settings; dual filtration system; advanced interactive touch-screen technology; 75-day trial

The Tyent ACE-11 Turbo ionizer is one of the best water ionizers for home use, but you’ll need to have plenty of kitchen space available to put this large countertop machine. It stands out in appearance for being one of the only ionizers we looked at that has an easily sanitizable stainless steel exterior, as well as a touchscreen. We would have liked the touchscreen to be a bit larger, since it’s hard to push the right button and to read all the labels. However, this is a minor complaint, and we appreciated that this machine comes with seven different pH presets.

What’s inside this machine is even more impressive. Tyent designed the ACE-11 with 11 hybrid plates that are as durable as solid titanium plates, but offer nearly the same surface area as high-throughput mesh plates. These plates give this water alkalizer an impressive pH range from 1.7 to 12 – almost as wide as the Life Ionizer MXL-15, and at a significantly cheaper cost. It also offers a maximum ORP of -1,050, which ensures that you’ll get enhanced health benefits for the price you pay for this ionizer.

The ionizer comes with two different 0.01-micron filters, although Tyent doesn’t specify whether these are active charcoal filters or whether they need to be replaced after a certain amount of flow. The flow isn’t adjustable, which is a little bit disappointing, but we were happy to find that you can run a self-cleaning mode at the end of each ionization cycle.

What are our favorite features?

  • Extremely wide pH range
  • Hybrid electrode plates offer durability and surface area
  • Dual 0.01-micron filters
  • Maximum ORP of -1,050
  • Touchscreen control

What could be better?

  • Touchscreen is small
  • Not clear if filters need to be replaced
  • Flow is not adjustable

  • pH range: 9 to 9.5 pH
  • ORP: up to -450
  • Filter life: 607.5 gal.
  • Warranty: 2-year limited

Other features: reduces over 220 water contaminants by 99.9%; 4 proprietary cartridges; cartridge change indicator and filter change alert

If you’re looking primarily to get drinking water from your water ionizer, and aren’t worried about acidic water for cleaning, this model from Cosan Pure Hydration is a good choice for you. Compared to other alkalizers, it’s simple to use and light on settings – it only produces water in the range of pH 9 to 9.5, the optimal pH for drinking based on studies to date. However, bear in mind that the ORP of the water this ionizer produces is somewhat low, at just -450 mV.

Importantly, this ionizer doesn’t use plates like most of the other models we reviewed. Instead, it uses a replaceable cartridge that also contains a filter. You’ll need to replace the cartridge about once a year, but it’s not all that expensive. Helpfully, the machine is also designed to give you an alert 180 days and 90 days before your cartridge runs out of steam.

While the versatility of this ionizer in terms of pH is limited, it’s designed to give you the most flexibility within your kitchen. The ionizer is perfect as a countertop unit since it has a built-in spigot for filling a glass. But, if you want to convert it to an under sink unit, it comes with a simple adapter to do so. If you get water from a spout in your refrigerator, you can also hook the ionizer in line to convert that spigot to dispense cold, pH 9 water.

What makes it stand out?

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Very simple to operate
  • Combines filter and ionization into a replaceable cartridge
  • Built-in spigot
  • Adapts to work under sink or with refrigerator water line

Which disadvantages must you keep in mind?

  • Limited to producing pH 9 water
  • Maximum ORP is just -450 mV

Chanson MIRACLE Countertop Alkaline Water IonizerBest Commercial Water Ionizer

  • Type: countertop

  • pH range: 2.5 to 11.7
  • ORP: +1,180 to -865
  • Filter life: 2,377.5 gal (or up to a year of use)
  • Warranty: limited lifetime

Other features: LCD display shows the remaining filter life; suitable for light commercial use; auto-adjusting self-clean function

Don’t let the small size of this countertop water ionizer from Chanson fool you. It’s a heavy-duty unit built to handle large volumes of water, such as in a commercial setting like a home or small restaurant.

To start, the ionizer has seven virtually indestructible titanium plates that are able to push the pH of your water as high as 11.7 or as low as 2.5. While that isn’t the widest range we’ve seen, it’s more than enough to give you water for everything from drinking to disinfecting to cosmetic use. The ORP range is impressive, too, with the ability to reduce your water to -865 mV.

One of the things that we liked most about this ionizer is that it comes with a serious filtration unit. The built-in filter has a life of nearly 2,400 gallons – double any of the Chanson ionizer’s closest competitors. The LCD display shows you how much filter life is remaining, so you never have to worry that you’re drinking unfiltered water without knowing it.

Controlling the ionizer is also simple. We would have liked more precision control over the pH and ORP of the produced water, but being able to choose between seven presets is fast and convenient. There’s also a self-cleaning function that relies on reverse polarity, which makes it easier to maintain the unit. Critically, Chanson provides a lifetime warranty on this ionization system.

What do we love it for?

  • Extremely long filter life
  • Built for commercial use
  • Maximum ORP of -865
  • Seven presets for water pH
  • Lifetime warranty

What were we disappointed with?

  • Cannot specify output pH or ORP
  • Flow is not adjustable

bawell Platinum Alkaline Water Ionizer MachineBest Dual Filtration Water Ionizer

  • Filter life: 1,321 gal.
  • Warranty: limited lifetime

Other features: dual-stage water filter system; advanced display showing pH, ORP, filters lifespan, and water electrolysis settings

This countertop water ionizer for home users from bawell stands out for its dual-stage water filtration system. Instead of a single filter, this ionizer uses two filtration canisters, each with a lifespan of more than 1,300 gallons. Even better, you can easily monitor the remaining filter life of each canister on the included LCD screen. If you want even more extensive filtration, bawell offers an optional three-stage external filtration system that mounts underneath your sink (sold separately).

Of course, this ionizer offers much more than just filtration. It includes seven titanium plates that together are capable of producing water with a pH between 2 and 12. For how modestly priced this water ionizer is, that’s an extremely broad pH range. However, it’s noteworthy that you won’t necessarily reap all the benefits of drinking pH 12 water from this alkalizer, since the ORP is limited to just -800 at full strength.

Users also noted that the control panel for this water ionizer is a little more difficult to use than some other models. It’s a nice display, with touch buttons around a central LCD screen. However, the buttons make it slightly difficult to access the ionizer’s eight different pH settings, and you can’t specify the exact pH or ORP of your output water. Still, users were happy to find that the controls are reasonable once you get used to the machine, and there’s a button included for running a self-cleaning with reverse polarity after each ionization cycle.

What are its best features?

  • Two filter canisters
  • Optional external three-stage filtration
  • Produces water with pH up to 12
  • Self-cleaning cycle

What could be improved?

  • ORP limited to -800
  • Control panel is slightly hard to use
  • Type: countertop
  • Number of plates: 5
  • pH range: 3.5 to 10.5
  • ORP: +600 to -500 mV
  • Filter life: 1,585 gal.
  • Warranty: 1-year limited

Other features: active carbon water filter; 7 water settings; Japan ionic membrane

This inexpensive water ionizer from AquaGreen is our top pick for getting healthier water on a tight budget. The alkalizer is built with five platinum-coated titanium plates and a Japanese ionic membrane, which together give it an impressively wide pH range of 3.5 to 10.5. You can’t fully control the pH, which is a little bit disappointing, but the seven included ionization settings allow you to specify it within about 0.5 pH units. Users particularly liked that the pH and ORP of your water are displayed on the LCD screen.

The ionizer comes with an activated carbon filter membrane, which is designed to last for a whopping 1,500 gallons of water. However, you need to keep rough track of how much water you’ve run through the ionizer, as the LCD screen won’t notify you when the filter needs to be changed. This machine is capable of self-cleaning with a reverse polarity function, but note that it doesn’t have an adjustable flow rate from the nozzle.

The other thing to watch out for with this unit is that AquaGreen only offers a short one-year warranty. A handful of users reported that the machine stopped working within the first six months, but in general users didn’t report problems. This points to a few faulty units rather than a systematic problem, and those users who had an issue did praise AquaGreen’s customer service team.

What stands out?

  • Wide pH range for the price
  • Inexpensive
  • Activated charcoal filter
  • Self-cleaning function
  • Good customer service

What cons did we manage to find?

  • Only one-year warranty
  • Reports of some faulty units
  • No adjustable flow

Level UpWay Water IonizerBest Portable Water Bottle Ionizer

  • Type: portable bottle
  • Number of plates: N/A (electrodes with platinum and titanium coated an SPE/PEM membrane used)
  • pH range: 8 to 9
  • ORP: up to -600
  • Filter life: N/A
  • Warranty: 1-year limited

Other features: USB charging; temperature-resistant borosilicate double-wall glass; SPE ionic membrane

This portable water bottle system is the ideal choice for health enthusiasts on the go. The bottle holds around 350 mL of water and uses electricity to put extra hydrogen into your water. While that’s a slightly different process than ionization, the end result is the same – this bottle bumps the pH of your water from 7 up to 8 to 9. It also increases the ORP of your water to an impressive -600 mV.

The bottle itself is made of thick borosilicate double-walled glass, which makes it a good insulator. In fact, users report using this bottle to increase the pH of hot water for tea and coffee brewed right in the bottle. It would be nice if the bottle held slightly more water, especially since it’s not particularly small in size, but that’s not a major issue for most users.

Charging the bottle on the go is simple since it just takes a standard micro-USB charging cable. That means it’s easy to charge the bottle with a portable battery, and when fully charged it’s able to run 15 hydrogen cycles before you need to recharge it. Keep in mind that hydrogen is unstable, even when it’s in water, so you’ll need to drink the water within a few hours of running a cycle or the pH will slowly drop back down to 7.

What stands out?

  • Portable hydrogen machine
  • Insulated bottle is good for tea and coffee
  • Maximum ORP of -600
  • 15 cycles per USB charge
  • Inexpensive

What cons did we manage to find?

  • Must drink water quickly or pH will drop
  • Only holds 350 mL of water

Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 5.0Best Compact Water Ionizer

  • Type: countertop
  • Number of plates: 5
  • pH range: 4.5 to 10
  • ORP: -600 to +600 mV
  • Filter life: 1,056 gal. (or up to a year)
  • Warranty: 5-year limited

Other features: 3-stage cleaning cycle; adjustable flow rate; active carbon filter; ETL certified

The Deluxe 5.0 is a small countertop ionizer that fits well even in cramped kitchen spaces. The small size limits this unit to just five electrode plates, which means that you do give up a fair amount of ionization. That’s not a problem if you primarily want to use this alkalizer for producing drinking water, since it can easily get up to pH 10 and sports a maximum alkaline ORP of -600 mV. But, on the acidic end of the spectrum, this unit only acidifies water down to pH 4.5 and +600 ORP.

Still, there’s a lot to like about this compact unit. For one thing, the price. For what you’re getting, this water ionizer is impressively affordable. It also comes with a five-year limited warranty, which is significantly longer than most other alkalizers in this price range.

Users also liked several of the ease of use features built into this ionizer. It’s self-cleaning, using reverse polarity after each cycle to remove any remaining solutes from the electrode plates. You can also easily adjust the outflow from the nozzle, which is nice when you’re trying to fill up a glass or water bottle and don’t want to deal with splashing.

The biggest complaint that we have about this ionizer is that it doesn’t offer much in the way of customization options. There are seven pre-set options for producing water. However, despite the inclusion of a large LCD screen, you can’t specify what pH exactly you’d like your water to be produced at.

What makes it special?

  • Compact and inexpensive
  • Self-cleaning with reverse polarity
  • Produce water up to pH 10
  • Durable titanium electrodes
  • Five-year warranty

What cons did we find?

  • Limited acidity range
  • Cannot specify exact pH for your water

Things to Consider

Now that you’ve learned more about our top ten picks for the best water ionizer on the market today, it’s time to decide which one is right for you. In our buying guide, we’ll take a closer look at what water ionizers do and how they do it. We’ll also explain what features you need to think about when choosing a water ionizer for your home.

The benefits of having a water ionizer

Ionized water has a slightly higher pH than standard tap water, meaning that it’s more alkaline. That might not seem like much of a difference to non-chemists, but to your body, the difference can be huge. The most important thing to know about alkaline water is that it’s a natural antioxidant. That means that alkaline water can prevent a wide variety of negative effects caused by oxidation in your body, including aging, cancer, and immune system hyperactivity.

Adding alkalinity to your water can also directly neutralize acids in your digestive system. In fact, one study found that naturally alkaline water reduced the severity of acid reflux among people who suffer from this condition.

More generally, ionized water is thought to contribute to weight loss, skin health, and overall hydration. One study even suggests that alkaline water can reduce blood viscosity, meaning that it could reduce the incidence of blood clots and improve circulation throughout your body. While the science is still out on these effects, early studies that have borne them out are promising.

How water ionizers work

Water ionizers add alkalinity to your water by passing the liquid between two charged electrodes, also known as plates. This low-voltage electricity causes any soluble minerals, metals, and other impurities in the water to migrate toward either the positive or negative plate depending on their charge. The water, consequently, is separated into an alkaline and an acid stream. The alkaline water stream is what you’ll then drink, while the acidic water can be used for skincare or for any other household needs.

Features to consider when choosing a water ionizer

With the benefits and mechanism behind water ionizers in mind, it’s time to think carefully about the features you need in your water alkalizer.

Type of water ionizer

10 Best Water Ionizers for Any Home or Office – Make Your Water Healthier

The first thing you need to consider is whether you want a countertop, under sink, or portable alkaline water system. To a large extent, this comes down to how much water you drink and how much space you have in your home. For either countertop or under sink ionizers, it’s a good idea to look for units that can connect to your sink for automatic filling and ionization.

Portable water ionizers, like the Level UpWay ionizer, are a good choice if you want alkaline water on the go. However, since these models only hold small volumes of water, they can be a bit cumbersome for everyday home use.

The quality of water cells and plates

The water cell and electrified plates are at the heart of every water ionizer. If these components are working optimally, you’re not getting the most out of your water.

That’s why it’s critical that you look closely at the quality of the water cell and plates whenever choosing an alkaline water system. Of course, this was a major part of our assessment, so you can be confident that all the ionizers we looked at are built with reliable cells and plates.

If there is a filter: water filtration quality and filter life

Not every water ionizer has a filter – for example, you won’t find a filter on the portable Level UpWay model. However, most countertop and under sink ionizers use a filter to remove unwanted contaminants from your water before it’s ionized.

If your alkalizer does use a filter, it’s important to check whether it actually removes common contaminants. More important, you’ll want to see how long it lasts – filters can cost upwards of $50 to replace for many ionizers.

Most of the ionizers we looked at, including all the models from Aqua Ionizer, AquaGreen, and bawell, have filters that are rated for at least 1,000 gallons of flow. To put that in perspective, that’s around one years’ worth of filtration for most people.

pH range

Every water ionizer is capable of making water that’s around pH 9 – that’s about the right alkalinity for drinking water if you want to get the health benefits of ionization. But, there are benefits to having a much wider pH range available through ionization. Acidic water can be used as a body wash or for cleaning your home, since it does a good job of disinfecting. Water that is more basic than pH 9 can be used for brewing tea and coffee, or for washing fruits and vegetables to remove pesticides.

Among the water ionizers we reviewed, you’ll find a whole range of pH range options. The bawell, Tyent, and Life ionizer systems stand out for making water that is pH 12 or above.

Oxidation reduction potential (ORP) is a measure of the degree to which alkaline water serves as an antioxidant. In this case, a more negative number means that your water is more antioxidizing. To get the most health benefits out of your ionized water, a more negative ORP is generally better. That’s one of the big reasons our Editor’s Choice model from Aqua Ionizer stands out – it boasts an ORP of -800 mV.

A water ionizer is a major investment in your home and your health. So, you want to be sure that your water alkalizer will last. Many manufacturers offer warranties, although the length of these warranties can vary widely. For example, Chanson includes a lifetime warranty on its ionizer, while AquaGreen’s ionizer only comes with a one-year warranty.

Of course, your budget is also important to consider. Water ionizers vary widely in price, from the budget-friendly AquaGreen ionizer for $479 to the premium Life Ionizer for nearly $4,000.

No, water ionizers are different from hydrogen machines. Instead of ionizing water, hydrogen machines add molecular hydrogen directly to your water. When using a hydrogen machine, there is only one water flow, not separate acidic and alkaline flows.

pH is a measure of the acidity of alkalinity of water. A water ionizer doesn’t change the pH of your water overall, but it does split your water so that you end up with a high-pH (alkaline) stream and a low-pH (acidic) stream.

Oxidation reduction potential is a measure, in millivolts, of the chemical reducing power of your water. OPR is related to the concentration of OH- ions in your water, and essentially works as a measure of how much antioxidizing power your water has.

Most people drink alkaline water, since it has been shown to have a number of long-term health benefits. But, if you have extra alkaline water, you can also use it for household cleaning since it works well as a disinfectant. Many people also use ionized water for removing pesticides from fresh fruits and vegetables.

Our Verdict

Our three overall favorite water ionizers on the market today are the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 7.0, the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 9.5, and the Life Ionizer MXL-15.

The MXL-15 is one of the best alkaline water ionizers if you prize performance. It has the widest pH range of any unit we reviewed and the most impressive ORP capability to boot. However, given the price of that unit, it will unfortunately be out of the reach of a lot of home users.

The two Aqua Ionizer models have a lot in common, and a lot to like. Both are affordably priced while still offering a wide pH range and an impressive ORP for your water. Users loved that the controls are simple to use and the output flow is adjustable. In our opinion, the Delux 7.0 is the overall best water ionizer on the market today, since it offers the best combination of health benefits, features, and price.
